Speaker 1: Sarafian Salleh
Sarafian is a life member of GSS and manages his own engineering consultancy firm DiagnoVeritas Pte Ltd for 22 years. He is a co-founder of Bugis Malay Society Singapore in 2017 regularly conducts heritage programs for schools and the public. He has appeared in several television programs encompassing the local heritage of the Malay world. Content of the talk: • Sarafian’s kampong village at Aukang and the Teochew community living around his house. His late grandmother who was a landlord, rented houses to families at Lorong Berhala, a kampong in Aukang • His late grandfather, being the most intellectual person in the village always extended a helping hand to fellow Chinese, Indian and Malay neighbours in education, government forms and other miscellaneous administration. • During the racial riots, his family was protected and reassured safety by their Chinese neighbours. • Being a house with a large verandah, it was a common sight for the multi-racial neighbours to spend their evenings at his grandmother’s house sharing food and chatting with each other.
Speaker 2: Bernard Chiang
Bernard has served in the grassroots organisations for 40 years, and has received numerous service awards. He was inspired by his father`s leadership in formulating peace and harmony in Kampong Chia Keng since the 1950s. With his father`s influence and experience in the kampong days he joined the Braddell Heights Grassroots organisations in 1980 and chaired the Residents’ Committee for sixteen years. He then moved on to chair the Inter-Racial and Religious Confidence Circle since year 2005.
