Celebrate Chinese New Year — Reminiscing Chinese Roots

Key Themes: Faith, rituals, worship, traditions and food

Every Chinese New Year (CNY) presents the opportunity for clan associations, guilds, social and religious organizations to hold a range of cultural activities. More importantly, family gatherings and human connections bolster traditions of respect for the elderly, care for others and advocate etiquette. Oftentimes, CNY provides the occasion to reconnect with relatives and trace one’s roots.

Moderator: Mr Liew Shin Liat – Mr Liew is a life member of GSS. He is a management consultant and has served in the Asia Pacific region for over 35 years.

Speaker 1: Cyprian Lim – Mr Lim is the Honorary English Secretary of GSS. He is a former teacher with the Ministry of Education, and coordinator of Religious Education and Character Development in St Gabriel’s Primary School. He is currently an independent researcher and a freelance English educator. Mr Lim is the author of “My Maternal Roots: A Story of Family, Faith and Freedom” – where he pieced together fragments of family history and endeavours of his ancestors.

Speaker 2: Mr Ivan Ho – Mr Ho is President of the Singapore Pawnbrokers’ Association. He was the Chairman of the Char Yong (Dabu) Association (茶阳 (大埔) 会馆) in 2013, and served there till 2018. He was also President of the Fong Yun Thai Association from 2019 to 2020. Currently, he is its Vice President. Mr Ho has also been serving as the Chairman of the Nanyang Khek Community Guild (南洋客属总会) since May 2018.

Speaker 3: Mr Jerome Teo – Mr Teo is the Assistant Honorary English Secretary of GSS. He is also a member of the Singapore Heritage Society and actively involved in various organisations in the fields of traditional culture, heritage, museums and clans.

  • Family history: Childhood memories of Sheng Hong Temple and maternal root tracing of Ann Kway Hokkien (Anxi Fujian) origin • Sheng Hong temple activities and the Ann Kway community • Hokkien customs, food and festivities. Praying of Tai Sui during Chinese New Year

Shin Liat for the enriching and fascinating talk on Reminiscing the Chinese roots I learned from all 3 Speakers I resonated with Cyprian as I am a Teochew Catholic Ivan excellent too I went to the Hakka Tulou and experience how they lived learnt the values, culture etc and tasted the Hakka cuisine and delicacies Now I know where Mee Hoon Kway come from!
