Clan Visit: The Philanthropy of Leong Khay Huay Kuan<\/span><\/h4>

Yesterday,\u00a0Chinese Ancestry Research<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0once again joined forces with the\u00a0Genealogy Society Singapore<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0(GSS) to organize a remarkable meeting with Leong Khay Huay Kuan. The event kicked off with Mr. Ng Yew Kang \u9ec3\u53cb\u6c5f, president of GSS, warmly introducing us to the Vice President of Leong Khay Huay Kuan, Mr. Zh\u014du J\u00f9nQ\u012bng \u5468\u4fca\u6e05. Soon after, we were joined by other passionate members such as Mr. Gu\u014d F\u00faT\u014dng \u90ed\u798f\u901a and Y\u00e1ng Qi\u00e1ng \u694a\u5f37, who brought an infectious enthusiasm to the gathering.<\/span><\/div>

After exchanging pleasantries, Mr. Y\u00e1ng Qi\u00e1ng \u694a\u5f37 captivated us with the story of his ancestral home, L\u00f3ngx\u012b \u9f8d\u6eaa, now a part of L\u00f3ngh\u01cei District \u9f8d\u6d77\u5340 in Zh\u0101ngzh\u014du \u6f33\u5dde, F\u00faji\u00e0n Province \u798f\u5efa\u7701. According to Mr. Y\u00e1ng, \u201cL\u00f3ngx\u012b \u9f8d\u6eaa was a bustling maritime port during the M\u00edng Dynasty \u660e\u671d. The ancient Yu\u00e8g\u01ceng \u6708\u6e2f in L\u00f3ngx\u012b was one of the prominent ports along the Maritime Silk Road, facilitating extensive international trade. Alongside F\u00fazh\u014du Port \u798f\u5dde\u6e2f during the H\u00e0n and T\u00e1ng Dynasties, Qu\u00e1nzh\u014du Port \u6cc9\u5dde\u6e2fduring the S\u00f2ng and Yu\u00e1n Dynasties, and Xi\u00e0m\u00e9n Port \u5ec8\u9580\u6e2fduring the Q\u012bng Dynasty, Yu\u00e8g\u01ceng played a crucial role in Fujian’s maritime history, collectively known as the \u2018Four Great Commercial Ports\u2019 in Fujian’s history.\u201d<\/span><\/div>

Driven by our members’ deep interest in history, Chinese Ancestry Research delved into the rich past of L\u00f3ngx\u012b \u9f8d\u6eaa\u7e23. We discovered that it was established in the sixth year of the Datong reign \u5927\u540c\u516d\u5e74 (540 CE) of Emperor W\u01d4 of Li\u00e1ng \u6881\u6b66\u5e1d during the Southern Dynasties \u5357\u671d. Imagine, a legacy stretching back almost 1500 years!<\/span><\/div>
\u00a0<\/div><\/div>
During the M\u00edng and Q\u012bng Dynasties, over 1.2 million descendants from L\u00f3ngh\u01cei \u9f8d\u6d77 emigrated to Taiwan, making it the ancestral home of many Taiwanese. These immigrants also significantly influenced the development of Taiwanese Minnan Hokkien, with a distinct Zh\u0101ngzh\u014du \u6f33\u5dde accent.<\/span><\/div>

From the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, many residents of L\u00f3ngx\u012b \u9f8d\u6eaa ventured to Southeast Asia, seeking new opportunities. Their primary destinations included Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines. Upon arrival, they relied on the support of fellow villagers to adapt and thrive. In Singapore, a group of these immigrants from L\u00f3ngx\u012b \u9f8d\u6eaa formed the Singapore Leong Khay Huay Kuan \u65b0\u52a0\u5761\u9f8d\u6eaa\u6703\u9928 in 1939 to better serve their community and preserve their cultural heritage.<\/span><\/div>
\u00a0<\/div><\/div>
In 1960, L\u00f3ngx\u012b \u9f8d\u6eaa and H\u01ceich\u00e9ng \u6d77\u6f84 were merged to form L\u00f3ngh\u01cei County \u9f8d\u6d77\u7e23, which eventually became L\u00f3ngh\u01cei District \u9f8d\u6d77\u5340. Today, the district spans 979 square kilometers with a population of 956,200 as of 2023.<\/span><\/div><\/div>
Before we could even suggest ancestry searches and family reconnections, the members of Leong Khay Huay Kuan eagerly proposed reuniting people of Fujian origin, especially those from L\u00f3ngx\u012b \u9f8d\u6eaa and the broader city of Zh\u0101ngzh\u014du. They offered to be the hub of support for our ancestry searches for those tracing their roots back to Zh\u0101ngzh\u014du. This generous proposal was music to our ears!<\/span><\/div>

Towards the end of our enlightening meeting, the Huay Kuan members highlighted their strong commitment to education and community support. They aim to foster academic excellence and social welfare among their members. Through their scholarship programs, the association provides essential financial assistance to students, encouraging the pursuit of higher education and professional development. Additionally, the association is deeply committed to community support, offering a range of welfare programs and services to members in need, including aid for the elderly and vulnerable. By promoting educational opportunities and ensuring the well-being of its community, the Singapore L\u00f3ngx\u012b Association \u65b0\u52a0\u5761\u9f8d\u6eaa\u6703\u9928 plays a pivotal role in preserving cultural heritage and enhancing the quality of life for its members. The organization, no doubt, instills in its members a strong sense of community and giving, making \u201cpaying it forward\u201d a guiding theme of its contributions to society.<\/span><\/div>

Mr. Zh\u014du \u5468 shared: \u201cLeong Khay Huay Kuan has productive assets that bring in good yearly returns on its investments, which are 100% channeled into philanthropic causes, including financial aid to its members \u2014especially in education \u2014and to society at large. Unlike many other clan or hometown associations in Singapore, we attract many young members. Look, here is our list of officers, many of whom are in their 30s and 40s.\u201d He proudly showed us the organization chart of its officers prominently displayed on the walls of their premises. A Google search on Leong Khay Huay Kuan revealed a long list of links to the organization\u2019s good work amongst the myriad of local universities. A big wow and hats off!<\/span><\/div><\/div>
