1000 Years of Sejarah Melayu in Singapore
By Sarafian Salleh
What was Singapore before 1819? And how far back does the story of its people really go?
1000 Years of Sejarah Melayu in Singapore takes readers beyond the familiar story of Singapore’s beginnings in 1819 to explore a much older and richer past.
Drawing on archaeology, ancient maps, inscriptions, chronicles and oral traditions, Sarafian Salleh traces Singapore’s connections to the wider Malay maritime world and the diverse communities that shaped the region.
Blending historical research with decades of heritage work, this 600-page volume is a journey through history, people, places and ancestry—inviting us to rediscover Singapore, understand Melayu more deeply, and perhaps find where our own ancestors fit into this thousand-year story.
Sarafian Salleh is a Singaporean author, heritage researcher, licensed tour guide and mechanical engineer who has spent over four decades researching the history and maritime heritage of the Malays and Bugis in Singapore and the wider Malay Archipelago. He is also the author of Tuah Bugis – Chronicles of the Seafaring People of Singapore (2023).
