Genealogy Society Singapore and NUS Baba House presents – Peranakan Heritage
A Zoom session by Ronney Tan & Dawn Marie Lee
Baba Ronney Tan Koon Siang and Nyonya Dawn Marie Lee hosted this online talk about Peranakan heritage in Singapore with a virtual tour of the NUS Baba House – once the ancestral home of the Wees, a Peranakan Chinese merchant family.
Ronney, president of the Keng Teck Whay, Singapore’s oldest Peranakan self-help association, gave an introduction to Peranakan heritage and pioneer Baba families.
Dawn, editor of The Peranakan magazine and a trained volunteer docent with the Baba House since 2015, spoke about the Baba House and the neighborhood, the Wee family and their connection to Singapore’s history.
It followed by a virtual tour of the NUS Baba House at 157 Neil Road by Nyonya Danielle Sim, Assistant Manager (Outreach). The House is a beautifully restored, rare architectural gem in the historic Blair Plain district. It showcases Peranakan Chinese material culture and takes visitors on an experiential trip into a Peranakan Chinese family home of the 1920s.
