An GSS-NHB online event on Bugis & Peranakan Heritage by Sarafian Salleh & Ronney Tan
Bugis: Few Singaporeans are aware of the Bugis as a people, an ethnic identity and a culture. Even fewer know that the Bugis were master seafarers from Sulawesi, often incorrectly associating the Bugis with pirates and usurpers alone. In this programme, Mr Sarafian Salleh will bring us through a surprising journey of rediscovery of his Bugis identity via the construction of his family’s genealogy.
Peranakan: Said to be Chinese in spirit and tradition, the Peranakans are additionally imbued with the influence of Malay customs and are fluent in Baba Malay. Despite their smaller community, much of their rich culture and heritage is still preserved. Mr Ronney Tan will share with us more on his personal narrative, taking us through his family genealogy and sharing more about the Babas in Singapore.
